Frequently asked questions.

What is a Notary Public?

A Notary Public is a specialist lawyer. Unlike a standard witness, a Notary acts as an impartial public official who performs four key functions:

1. Verification – Identifies the signatory through official identification.

2. Confirmation – Ensures the signatory understands the document and has the legal capacity to sign.

3. Attestation – Witnesses the signing of the document to confirm the act was voluntary.

4. Authentication – Endorses the document with an official seal and signature, confirming its validity.

Notarisation is a widely accepted anti-fraud measure for verifying identity and protecting against fraudulent documents.

What is Certification? What is Notarisation?

Certification means confirming that a copy of a document is a true and accurate copy of the original. When a Notary certifies documents, they do not confirm whether the original document itself is genuine.

Notarisation means authenticating the signing or execution of a document. When a notary notarises documents, they do not confirm that the contents of the document are true or legally valid.

Verification means confirming a document’s authenticity directly with the issuing body or authority to ensure it was genuinely issued and its contents are accurate.

What is Legalisation? What is an Apostille?

Legalisation means confirming that the person who signed and sealed the document, such as a notary public, was authorised to do so. When a government authority legalises a document, they do not validate its contents.

Once confirmed, a certificate known as an Apostille or a legalisation stamp is attached to the document, allowing it to be accepted in another country.
